A 69-year-old Wrexham man has raised £100 for Cancer Research Wales by finishing the Wrexham 10K in memory of his late father.
Mark Goodfellow is from the Mount and his father - Neil, passed away from lung cancer in 2011.
Since late 2024, Mark has also been volunteering at the Cancer Research Wales shop in Wrexham where he is popular with customers and staff.
“I decided to attempt the Wrexham 10K after seeing a leaflet in the shop – I used to walk long distances a lot in the past and I said to myself I’d run down the hills and walk up them,” said Mark.
“I was sponsored by a few people – including customers from the shop, my uncle and cousin and my friends also sponsored me as well as Jamie and Ruth who work with me at Cancer Research Wales.”
“I felt very proud about what I’d done, and I actually got a medal, so now I can say ‘I’ve been there and done that’. It was a great sense of achievement, and I surprised myself that I was able to do it. I could have gone further, but I don’t think I’d like to do the London Marathon, which is 26 miles”, laughed Mark.
Speaking about his volunteering role, Mark commented: “I enjoy volunteering at Cancer Research Wales and it’s a very friendly place. People often come and talk to me at the shop about their experiences with cancer and I try and offer them a listening ear and help when I can.”
Cancer Research Wales is the only charity completely dedicated to funding research into cancer in Wales.
It opened its shop in Wrexham on 11 May 2024 and sells a variety of goods including pre-loved clothing, accessories and homeware and there are opportunities to volunteer there too.
Jamie Roberts is the manager of the Cancer Research Wales shop and said he and his team are very proud of Mark.
“We’re all very proud of Mark for what we has achieved by completing the Wrexham 10K and raising valuable funds to support our work.
“Mark is a very popular with everyone at the Cancer Research Wales shop – from the customers, the staff and our other volunteers - we all like Mark” added Jamie.
